Project Description

The Hadyn Ellis Building will be a highly advanced facility for post-graduate interdisciplinary scientific teams. The site is being built by BAM Construct, and Morgan Sindall was appointed as BREEAM Advisor and Assessor for the project. This resulted in the building design and construction winning the Higher Education category in the annual BREEAM Awards Wales for 2012. The project has also been awarded with a BREEAM rating of 'Excellent'. These accomplishments would not have been possible without various sustainability features at the heart of the design.

Health and safety has been an on-going focus of the construction process, leading to three Gold Health and Safety Awards being won to date. Potential building users were involved in writing the briefs for the design team, guaranteeing a highly advanced and inspirational educational environment. The project team have been producing a newsletter with the University in order to keep local residents and students up to date with proceedings. 

 

The project held an 'open doors' event to allow the local public to find out more about the innovative building. Progress of construction has been available via the build webcam, providing the public and potential users with a source of constant information. The Hadyn Ellis Building's ground floor design features an attractive area for lectures and conferences about Cardiff University's work, supplying the public with opportunities to see its research work at first hand and discuss it with academics.

Challenging ecological conditions were associated with the project due to its location on the site of a former railway siding. This meant an appropriate and careful construction process was required. Renewable energy is a key factor in the design, with various sources accumulating to meet 11% of the building's energy needs. A major part of this will be provided by solar panels installed on the roof.

 

Other sustainability features of the building itself include a passive design that prevents overheating and large parts of the building that are naturally ventilated. The building location has a high level of surrounding amenities, allowing access by foot and subsequently reducing unnecessary transport. The project is being built on brown-field land that has previously been developed. This will ensure minimal detrimental impacts to the local environment during the construction process. These factors, as well as others, have resulted in the Hadyn Ellis Building winning the Project Environmental Performance Award for the 4th quarter of 2011 and the 2nd quarter of 2012.

Sustainable procurement was a key focus of the project with sustainability emphasised in the tender specifications.The specification included a high level of waste management as well as responsible sourcing. The expert guidance and consultancy provided by Morgan Sindall enabled the design team to dramatically reduce remediation costs.
