Morgan Sindall’s construction business Morgan Ashurst has been awarded two contracts worth more than £25 million by the University of Leeds to build a huge student accommodation complex and to refurbish a Grade II-listed Colour Science Laboratory.
As part of the first contract, worth £21 million, Morgan Ashurst will build two ‘half-hexagon’-shaped student accommodation blocks – one eight-storeys and the other six storeys high – at Mount Preston Street, Leeds. Together, the new buildings, named Charles Morris Halls, will accommodate 457 en-suite bedrooms, as well as shared kitchens and lounge areas. Morgan Ashurst will use a crane to install ready-made bathroom ‘pods’ in the buildings, which will significantly reduce construction time, as well as cost.
The firm has also won a £4 million project to refurbish the University of Leeds’ Colour Science Laboratory at Woodhouse Lane, which will remain fully operational throughout the project. Morgan Ashurst is reconfiguring the space and providing new offices, meeting rooms and fume cupboards.
The scheme at Charles Morris Halls is due to be completed in June 2010 and the refurbishment of the Colour Science Laboratory is scheduled for completion in December 2010.
