Morgan Sindall to deliver £209m A1 road JV

Morgan Sindall’s infrastructure services business Morgan Est, is to start work on a £209 million major road contract for the Highways Agency. The works will include upgrading the two-lane dual carriageway to a three-lane motorway as well as installing low-noise surfacing to benefit local residents.

The award – worth over £100 million to the Group – will see Morgan Est working alongside Carillion to upgrade the southern section of the A1 from Dishforth to Barton. The total cost of the scheme is £318 million.

The A1 is a strategically important north/south inter-regional trunk road, linking London and the South of England with the North East of England and Scotland. It also plays a key role linking other strategic routes such as the M62 and A19.

"This is a major road project and we have been working on the contract with the Highways Agency since 2004. Morgan Est has an excellent track record in delivering infrastructure projects of this type and we are excited to be working alongside Carillion,” says Paul Smith, Morgan Sindall’s chief executive. “The deal demonstrates our strength in the roads sector, where we are already delivering the £445 million M74 completion project - Scotland's largest ever road construction scheme – as part of the Interlink joint venture, as well as the £62.5m A1073 in Lincolnshire.”

Work is scheduled to start in March 2009, and is due to finish in 2012.
