A health centre in central London built by Morgan Sindall’s construction business Morgan Ashurst has picked up the top prize for public building. The new Kentish Town Health Centre in Camden, which Morgan Ashurst completed last year, was named Public Building Project of the Year at the national Building Awards 2010 held in London last night.
Designed by architects AHMM and delivered through an NHS LIFT agreement with Camden & Islington Community Solutions (CICS), the £10.6 million pioneering facility was praised for its good sustainable design and for the collaborative way the scheme was delivered.
The centre, which sets a new standard for the NHS, was realised through partnership working between a local design champion, contractor, architect, and Camden & Islington Community Solutions. Ideas of transparency, innovation and connectivity were embraced by the whole team who worked collaboratively to create a building that expresses the new, holistic approach to healthcare.
The new centre, which opened last year, has a wide range of facilities for treatment and diagnosis, as well as community use. These include rooms for general practice, dentistry, children’s services, consulting, examinations, physiotherapy, audiology and breast screening services. In addition, there is improved access to psychology services, nursing, health visiting and baby clinics, as well as a staff library – which includes a 10-terminal training centre and conference rooms.
In future, the centre will also include departments for podiatry and specialist dermatology, a community café and a gym.
“This is a terrific building which sets new standards in how community health facilities are designed and built,” says John Homer, Morgan Ashurst managing director in the East. “We’re all delighted it’s won this award because it really is an outstanding example of how good functional buildings can be constructed in an affordable way and through public private partnership procurement.”
Kentish Town Health Centre is the fourth NHS LIFT project carried out by Morgan Ashurst on behalf of CICS – a public private partnership between Camden PCT and Islington PCT, Community Health Partnerships and Community Solutions for Primary Care Ltd.
